European violins under bright
New Zealand sun

Fine violin maker - repairer Birute Kul creating violin sound...

Who we are?

We both (Birute and Czes) are European newcomers (2003) to NZ - a couple of violin makers and researchers. We are undoubtedly addicted to violin family instruments. Being able to learn trade secrets as well as understand scientific results and, more importantly, to apply them towards achieving desirable results. We have permanent reasons to gradually improve overall value - sound as well as appearance of our created violin family musical instruments.

What we can propose you?

We handcraft all violin family instruments. You can get some information about the quality of our violin family instruments following violin family instruments descriptions and also reading some violin players testimonials.

As we are mainly concerned about violin sound, Czes wrote several articles about those matters:

  • Fine violin - brief description of this highly enigmatic and multifaceted matter
  • Stradivarius case - effort to describe the phenomenon of sound peculiarities etc of old Cremonese violins
  • The Glory of Cremona - definitely the best and useful existing tool for creators of copies of famous Cremonese violins

What violins we are creating?

We are travelling quite traditional way (following Cremona giants Stradivarius [Stradivari] and Guarneri), but most probably not so usual direction?

We are hunting ideal violin sound. Here is short description how we usually achieve our goal crafting violins.

What are prices of our violins?

We arrived into an enigmatic world of violins because of violins. However, being artisans, we must be business people as well. So, there is article with violin family instruments price guidelines.

Why us?

Searching internet, I met lots of violin makers, claiming they make copies of famous Cremonese (Stradivarius, Guarneri etc) violin family instruments. As a rule, all of them mentioned dimensions, appearance, colour... Sadly, almost nobody mentioned violin acoustic characteristics.

I understand the reason. To be able to create a copy of a violin sound, it is necessary to have at least a benchmark (hardly possible to imagine a violin maker, testing a $1m+ instrument in a workshop).

No doubt, we have no any such instrument. But, in addition to our instrument making knowledge, we have definitely the best possible tool - examples of old Cremona violins sound.

Again, using that tool helps us improve sound of poorly sounding violins.

At last I have my ideal violin. I turned down 14 instruments which came from all around the country, including an original cremonese violin, which I just couldn't convince myself to like. However I had no second thoughts about my new violin, made by Czes and Birute Kul, and instantly knew this was the one. The violin has very clean articulation and a sweet tone, also
projecting well. I have had many compliments about it. A lot of careful workmanship has obviously gone into the violin, which is very elegant and distinctive in looks. Before you look anywhere else, I strongly recomend Czes and Birute. It could save a lot of trouble, time and money.
